Why Is My AC Freezing Up? 7 Common Causes
If your air conditioner has ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil, it’s a sign that something isn’t working properly. A frozen AC may still run, but it won’t cool efficiently and can eventually lead to compressor damage if the problem isn’t corrected.
1. Dirty Air Filter
A clogged air filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil. Without enough warm air moving across the coil, the temperature can drop below freezing and ice begins to form.
2. Low Refrigerant
Low refrigerant is usually caused by a leak. When refrigerant pressure drops, the evaporator coil becomes colder than normal and can freeze.
3. Dirty Evaporator Coil
Dust and debris on the evaporator coil reduce heat transfer, making it easier for ice to develop.
4. Weak Blower Motor
A failing blower motor or weak capacitor may not move enough air across the coil, causing freezing.
5. Closed or Blocked Air Vents
Closing too many supply vents or blocking return vents reduces airflow and may cause the evaporator coil to freeze.
6. Ductwork Restrictions
Collapsed flex duct, undersized return ducts, or airflow restrictions can all contribute to ice formation.
7. Incorrect Refrigerant Charge
An AC system that has been overcharged or undercharged may operate outside manufacturer specifications and experience freezing problems.
What Should You Do?
If your air conditioner is frozen:
- Turn the thermostat Off.
- Set the fan to On to help melt the ice.
- Replace a dirty air filter.
- Do not continue running the system while frozen.
- Schedule a professional HVAC inspection.
